Demystifying Dissociation Across Social Work Practice

Social work programs do not usually teach about dissociation. Often we think about Dissociative Disorders as something unwieldy that requires a high degree of specialized knowledge of clinical work to address. As social workers, however, we work with people who have experienced trauma all the time in all settings in social work practice. Whether or not our clients meet clinical criteria for PTSD, they most likely experience dissociation in some form. This workshop will discuss several models that explain what dissociation is, how it effects our work, and why it is essential to the success of our clients to be able to assess for dissociation in our clients and in ourselves. We will look at theory and research as well as case studies and anecdotal experience to begin to identify dissociation in our clients and ourselves and to learn when and how to use strategies and interventions to mitigate it.

• Explain dissociation, why it occurs, and learn about several models to explain dissociation;

• Describe how dissociation can effect work across social work practice and have an impact on our lives as practitioners;

• Assess when the clients or the practitioner is dissociating;

• Identify and demonstrate strategies to mitigate dissociation and interface effectively with people living with dissociative disorders.

About the Presenter:

Dina Solomon graduated with her MSW from SF State University in 2004. She has worked with adolescents in group homes and emergency shelters in California and Pennsylvania. She moved back to NH in 2009 when she completed a year-long intensive course in Trauma Treatment Studies at the Trauma Center at JRI in Brookline, MA. She has been in private practice for over 10 years where she works with individuals struggling with complex PTSD and associated challenges using various approaches, including EMDR. She is a solo parent who loves to cook, eat, be outside, read, work and hang out with friends and family. Proud member of NASW since 2009.
